The clocks go back at 2am on Sunday 29th October, meaning that we are hurtling headlong towards winter. However, let’s see it as a positive. The weekend is an hour longer and there are plenty of great ways to fill your time in LS29. Here’s This is Ilkley‘s guide to five ways to spend the extra hour in Ilkley.
Visit the Cow and Calf
It’s a classic Ilkley activity but, what it lacks in originality, it makes up for with stunning views and fresh air. Make sure you read the This is Ilkley post about the imposing rock formations before you go and be armed with everything you need to know about the Cow and Calf.
This is completely weather dependent, so it might take a little planning. You don’t need tropical sunshine, but rain makes the rocks slippery and fog means you can’t actually see what is one of the finest views in the world. A quick look at the BBC weather site suggests Sunday morning is the time to head up to the moor.
Have a Coffee at Outside the Box
Outside the Box on Bridge Lane is a community project that gives people with learning disabilities work experience. That’s fantastic and really worthy of your support, but crucially it’s also a great place to go for a coffee and something to eat. If you can think of a better way of spending the extra hour than by eating cake, I’d like to hear it.
Do the Tip Run
I have a whole list of jobs that I keep putting off because I’m too busy. With British Summertime coming to an end, we all receive the gift of time – an extra hour. I won’t be spending mine asleep, as would be sensible, because I have two young children who scoff at the very concept of relaxation. So I might as well tick off some chores.
Of course, the best thing about a tip run in Ilkley is that you get to drive down Golden Butts Road. That’s always good for a laugh, especially if you’re as childish as I am.
In fact, you could tour all the places with rude names in the Ilkley area, by exploring this post on that very subject.
Ilkley Playhouse Vintage Fair
Twice a year, Ilkley Playhouse hosts a festival of classic design, retro and kitsch when the vintage fair comes to town. This weekend sees the Weston Road venue open at 10am on Saturday for you to peruse the stalls selling clothing, homeware, books, furniture and more from the 20s to the 80s. There’s also more cake, which will boost your energy levels for the extra hour’s shopping.

Hit the Gym
If you’ve taken advantage of both attractive cake opportunities listed so far, you might consider using the time for a workout. It doesn’t hurt if it’s during an extra hour, right? Ilkley’s 24-hour gym, Anytime Fitness, has just opened in the Moors Shopping Centre, meaning you could be pumping iron during the actual additional 2am hour on Sunday. If you’re insane, that is.
Not bothered about midnight reps? There are plenty of other gyms you can choose from in LS29. Take a look at the dedicated Ilkley Gyms page.
